Throughout history, many spiritual traditions have spoken about people who use manipulation, deception, or harmful spiritual practices for personal gain. Some refer to these individuals as warlocks. While beliefs vary, one thing remains true: God calls us to use discernment, wisdom, and prayer in every relationship.
Not every difficult person is a warlock, and not every failed relationship is the result of spiritual warfare. Sometimes people are simply unhealthy, dishonest, or emotionally unavailable. Discernment means looking at both a person’s actions and your own spiritual peace.
Signs That May Call for Spiritual Discernment
1. You constantly feel confused around them.
One day they make you feel loved, the next they become distant or cold. Their words and actions rarely match, leaving you emotionally exhausted.
2. They encourage you to move away from God.
Instead of supporting your faith, they mock prayer, discourage church, or make you feel guilty for seeking God first.
3. They thrive on manipulation.
They twist conversations, avoid accountability, and make you question your own judgment. Healthy love brings clarity, not constant confusion.
4. They are consumed by control.
They want to dictate who you talk to, where you go, how you dress, or how you spend your time. Love respects free will; control does not.
5. They wear different masks around different people.
They may appear charming in public but become completely different behind closed doors. Integrity means being consistent in every environment.
6. You lose your peace.
Your intuition continually tells you something is wrong. While anxiety can have many causes, repeatedly losing your sense of peace in a relationship is worth paying attention to.
7. They try to abuse you.
They slowly distance you from family, trusted friends, or your faith community until they become your only source of support.
8. They constantly lie.
Even about small things. Deception often becomes a pattern rather than an exception.
9. They feed on chaos.
Arguments, jealousy, drama, and emotional highs and lows become the normal rhythm of the relationship instead of stability and peace.
10. They never genuinely repent.
Everyone makes mistakes, but someone who continually refuses accountability or meaningful change should not be ignored.
What Should You Do?
Pray for wisdom.
Ask God to reveal the truth and remove confusion. Pray for discernment rather than fear. Don’t ignore red flags as love should never require you to silence your convictions or compromise your values.
Set healthy boundaries.
Protect your emotional, mental, and spiritual well being. Boundaries are not punishment—they are wisdom and a form of self respect.
Seek wise counsel. Communicate with trusted, spiritually mature people who know you and want the best for you.
Test actions, not just words.
Promises are easy. Character is revealed over time through consistent actions.
Don’t try to “fix” someone.
You can pray for people without sacrificing your own peace, safety, or spiritual health.
Stay rooted in God.
Spend time in Scripture, prayer, and worship. A strong spiritual foundation makes it easier to recognize unhealthy patterns.
Scriptures to Read and Meditate On
As you seek wisdom and discernment in your relationships, spend time reading and praying over these passages. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you into truth and to help you recognize what is from God.
Proverbs 4:23
“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”
A reminder to protect your heart, your peace, and your relationship with God. Not everyone should have access to your life.
James 1:5
“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.”
Pray for discernment before making decisions, especially in relationships.
1 John 4:1
“Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God…”
This encourages believers to practice spiritual discernment rather than accepting everything at face value.
Ephesians 6:10–18
The Armor of God
This passage reminds us to put on the full armor of God so we can stand firm against spiritual attacks and remain rooted in truth, righteousness, faith, salvation, and the Word of God.
2 Timothy 1:7
“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”
God calls us to walk in wisdom and confidence, not fear. Discernment should bring clarity and peace, not panic.
Psalm 91
A beautiful chapter to pray over yourself and your home, asking God for His divine protection, refuge, and peace.
Isaiah 54:17
“No weapon formed against you shall prosper…”
A reminder that God’s protection is greater than any attack or scheme against you.
Psalm 121:1–2
“I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.”
When you feel uncertain, remember that your help and guidance come from God alone.
Philippians 4:6–7
“Do not be anxious about anything… And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
God’s peace can help guard your heart and mind when making important decisions.
A Final Thought
Whether you believe in spiritual warfare literally or learning about it, the principle is the same: never ignore repeated patterns of manipulation, deception, or control. God is not the author of confusion. Healthy love produces honesty, respect, patience, accountability, and peace.
Pray for discernment. Walk in wisdom. Guard your heart, but never let fear become your guide. Let God’s truth NOT anxiety—lead every decision you make.
